Tesla Model Y V2L Goes Live as New Outlet Adapter Launches

Tesla has officially expanded Tesla V2L to Model Y Premium vehicles in the U.S. with a new Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) outlet adapter, extending a feature first introduced on the Cybertruck to more passenger vehicles. The adapter is priced at $80 and must be used with Tesla's Gen 3 Mobile Connector. It can provide up to 2.4 kW of AC power to external devices.

However, hardware limitations mean that most existing Model Y owners will not be able to use the feature. Only certain recently produced vehicles appear to meet the hardware requirements.

Compatible Models Exclude Model Y Standard and Model 3

Tesla currently lists the vehicles compatible with the Outlet Adapter as Model Y Premium, Model Y Performance, Model Y L, and Cybertruck. Tesla has also added the adapter as an available accessory through the vehicle configurator.

Model Y Standard is not included on the compatibility list, and Tesla has not officially listed any Model 3 vehicles as supporting the feature. However, one Tesla forum owner found that their Premium RWD Model 3, built in May 2026, already had the relevant hardware installed, sparking discussion about whether Model 3 vehicles could eventually support V2L.

For the Model Y Premium, hardware support appears to be limited to recently produced vehicles. According to automotive media reports, some refreshed vehicles built in May 2026 appear to be incompatible, while feedback from owners of vehicles produced in June has been mixed. This suggests Tesla may have changed the relevant components around this period.

The PCS System Is the Key to Model Y V2L Support

The key factor determining whether a Model Y can support V2L is its Power Conversion System (PCS).

The PCS is part of Tesla's high-voltage power electronics system and handles power conversion during processes such as AC charging. Newer versions of the PCS can support bidirectional power flow, allowing electricity to be sent back out through the vehicle's charging port.

This hardware requirement means that most Model Y vehicles already on the road cannot gain V2L capability.

Vehicles purchased before Tesla simplified its model naming to "Premium" and "Standard" in 2025 are also unlikely to be compatible, even if their configurations, such as the Long Range All-Wheel Drive version, were positioned as higher-end models.

This further suggests that V2L depends on a specific hardware revision rather than being a feature that can simply be unlocked through a software update.

Tesla's V2L Adapter Provides Up to 2.4 kW of AC Power

The outlet adapter does not connect directly to the vehicle's charging port. Instead, it must be used with the Gen 3 Mobile Connector.

To use it, the power plug on the Mobile Connector needs to be replaced with the outlet adapter, after which the charging connector is plugged into the vehicle.

The adapter provides two 110V AC outlets, with a maximum current of 20 amps and a maximum output of 2.4 kW. This is enough to power most household appliances and electric tools, including relatively high-power devices such as small portable heaters and portable air conditioners.

However, the feature only provides portable AC power. It does not give the Model Y full Powershare functionality and cannot provide whole-home backup power in the same way that a Cybertruck can when paired with a Powershare Wall Connector.

North American V2L Support Differs From Tesla's China Offering

Tesla first introduced the Outlet Adapter in the Chinese market in 2025. In China, Tesla also sells a more compact adapter that plugs directly into the vehicle's charging port without requiring a Mobile Connector, making it more convenient for portable use.

It remains to be seen whether Tesla will introduce a similar direct-connect adapter in North America.

Tesla previously enabled Powershare hardware support and V2L functionality on the Model Y Performance and Model Y L. Extending compatibility to the Model Y Premium represents another step in bringing the feature to more Tesla vehicles.

However, because of the hardware revision cycle, the vast majority of existing Tesla owners still do not have vehicles capable of supporting V2L.

For consumers interested in using the feature, checking the adapter's compatibility through the Tesla app's Store page is currently the most direct way to confirm eligibility. Owners can also use our free Tesla VIN Decoder to check key vehicle details, including the model, model year, and manufacturing location, before determining whether their vehicle meets the hardware requirements for V2L.
