Tesla Expands V2L Feature: Model Y L in China Gains Bidirectional Charging

Tesla has rolled out a significant new feature through an over-the-air (OTA) update. The 2025.32 software update for the Chinese market brings Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability to the Model Y L. This makes the Model Y L the third Tesla model to support using its high-voltage battery to power external devices, expanding the vehicle's utility beyond transportation.

1. What is V2L & How Does It Work?

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) allows an electric vehicle's battery to act as a portable power source. Owners can power small electronic devices directly from the car.

This is ideal for scenarios like camping, outdoor events, or emergencies. You can run appliances like laptops, coffee makers, or small kitchen tools. Tesla provides an official adapter to connect devices to the vehicle.

Key Technical Specifications:

  • Maximum Output Power: 2.4 kilowatts (kW).
  • Voltage/Current: 120 volts at 20 amps.
  • Primary Use: Running small household appliances.

An interesting secondary use is slowly charging another Tesla. However, this is not a fast charging solution. The V2L function adds only about 10 miles of range per hour. A standard home charger can add over 30 miles per hour. This highlights V2L's role for emergency or temporary power, not rapid charging.

2. Compatible Models & Market Availability

Currently, only three Tesla models support the V2L feature. Their capabilities vary significantly.

Supported Tesla Models:

Model V2L Capability Market Notes
Model Y L 2.4 kW power output for small devices Enabled via 2025.32 OTA update in China only
Model Y Performance 2.4 kW power output for small devices Available in select markets
Cybertruck High-power output, can power a home (V2H) Most advanced implementation

The feature is currently limited to the Chinese market for the Model Y L. Other models like the 2026 Model Y Juniper or existing global Model Y/3/X/S vehicles do not have V2L support yet.

This limitation is likely due to differences in high-voltage platform architecture and power supply modules. It is uncertain if Tesla will expand V2L to other models in the future.

3. The V2L Competitive Landscape

Tesla's introduction of V2L places it in a market where competitors have been leading. Chinese EV brands were early adopters of this technology.

BYD, Li Auto, and others had V2L as early as 2021. Some of their models offer outputs as high as 3.3 kW, exceeding Tesla's current 2.4 kW.

Some competitors even support Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) applications. This allows a car to power essential home circuits during a blackout.

Tesla is playing catch-up, arriving nearly four years later. This shows the rapid feature innovation by domestic Chinese automakers. While Tesla leads in areas like software and autonomy, it is now adapting to consumer demand for practical, everyday utility features like V2L.
