Tesla Ending FSD Buyout: Final Transfer Deadline Set for March 31, 2026

   For many Tesla owners, Full Self-Driving (FSD) was once an asset you could "buy and own." That era is officially coming to an end. Tesla has announced that the long-running FSD (Supervised) transfer program will conclude on March 31, 2026. This change appears to be permanent.

   Crucially, Tesla will stop selling the FSD buyout option starting February 14, 2026. Moving forward, the company will shift exclusively to a monthly subscription model. This means permanent "FSD ownership" will soon become a thing of the past for new buyers.

1. The Final Transfer Window and Rule Changes

   According to official Tesla policy, customers taking delivery of a new vehicle between April 24, 2025, and March 31, 2026, can apply for a transfer. This allows you to move your purchased FSD (Supervised) capability from your current car to a new one.

This final window features a significant rule change. Previously, Tesla required customers to take delivery by the quarter's end to qualify. Now, owners only need to place their order by March 31, 2026. Even if the delivery happens later, the transfer remains valid. This shift suggests Tesla is providing a genuine "last chance" for loyal owners rather than just a quarterly sales push.

2. Eligibility Requirements and Key Exceptions

   To successfully transfer your FSD license, you must meet several strict criteria before your new car is delivered.

Requirement Category Details
Ownership Must be the registered owner of both vehicles at the time of transfer.
Account Consistency Both vehicles must be registered under the same Tesla account.
FSD Status The current vehicle must have fully paid FSD (Supervised).
Agreement Users must agree to all terms at least 48 hours before delivery.

Important Exceptions:

  • You cannot transfer from Model Y Launch Series vehicles.
  • Vehicles currently under an active lease are ineligible.
  • The program does not apply to used inventory or commercial/business orders.
  • Cars with unpaid liens or pending buyback requests are excluded.

3. Hardware Upgrades and Asset Freezing

   Ending the buyout model effectively freezes the total number of transferable FSD licenses. For owners of older Hardware 3 (HW3) models, this deadline is critical.

   If you miss the March 31 deadline, your permanent FSD license will eventually "die" with your current car. Upgrading to a new vehicle with AI4 hardware now is the most cost-effective way to preserve your FSD investment. This ensures your software ownership remains valid on the newest, most capable hardware available.

4. Impact on Resale and Trade-in Value

   These policy shifts will directly influence your car's residual value. If you choose to trade in your vehicle to Tesla and transfer FSD, Tesla will remove the FSD value from your trade-in estimate.

   However, in the private resale market, a "bought" FSD license may still hold significant appeal. Permanent ownership follows the vehicle if it is not transferred to a new order. As Tesla moves toward a subscription-only future, a used car with a permanent FSD "title" could become a rare and valuable find.

   Ultimately, Tesla is reshaping its business into a service-oriented ecosystem. You must now decide between upgrading today to keep your FSD value or accepting a recurring monthly fee in the future.
