Tesla is rolling out a new navigation map update across North America. Unlike a regular OTA software update, this is a standalone navigation data package designed to refresh the vehicle's map database and improve navigation accuracy, route planning, and location information. The update refreshes data used by Tesla navigation map, including roads, charging locations, and points of interest.

Map Version Jumps to NA-2026.26

Tesla owner @Tesla_PNW shared on social media that their vehicle's navigation data was updated from NA-2025.44 to NA-2026.26.

Tesla's map packages use a year-and-week format for version numbers, making NA-2026.26 a significant jump from the previous NA-2025.44 release.

The owner initially thought the notification was for an FSD 14.3.7 software update. It turned out to be a large navigation data package that took more than 30 minutes to download. The installation did not require a vehicle restart.

The owner also suggested that some previously reported update "rollbacks" may have involved navigation data rather than FSD software updates.

Map Updates Cover Roads, Charging Stations, and POIs

Tesla has not published a detailed changelog for NA-2026.26, so the exact changes are not yet clear. Based on reports about this type of update, the package is expected to refresh information related to road networks, charging infrastructure, and Points of Interest (POIs).

Road data can include newly opened highways and city streets, updated lane configurations, revised speed-limit information, road names, intersections, and routing for newly built roads. These updates can help reduce navigation errors and improve route planning.

Charging information can also be refreshed with new Supercharger locations and updated details for existing stations. Tesla has also been expanding the way charging locations are presented in the vehicle, including 3D Supercharger site maps at select locations.

POI data covers locations such as restaurants, hotels, shopping centers, gas stations, public parking areas, and tourist attractions. Keeping these locations up to date can improve destination search accuracy.

Updated Navigation Data Supports Driver Assistance and Trip Planning

Tesla has used its own Linux-based operating system since the company's early days rather than integrating Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. This allows Tesla to build an independent in-car experience that includes its own navigation application. Tesla's navigation system combines Google Maps data with its own routing technology, while also using Baidu data in China.

Keeping navigation map data up to date is also important for Tesla's driver assistance features. Full Self-Driving (Supervised) relies on onboard speed-limit data to support driving decisions. Tesla does not appear to follow a fixed schedule for map updates, although this type of update has historically been released roughly twice a year.

For Tesla owners, current map data can support several vehicle functions, including turn-by-turn navigation, trip planning, Supercharger route guidance, energy consumption estimates, and predicted battery levels at the destination. Tesla's navigation system also plays a growing role in smarter route planning and personalized navigation.

For vehicles equipped with Autopilot or Full Self-Driving (Supervised), updated navigation data can also reflect newly opened roads and changes to transportation infrastructure, helping improve the vehicle's overall route awareness.

How to Check Your Tesla Map Version

You can check the current navigation database version directly from the vehicle's center screen:

  1. Tap Controls → Software.

  2. Scroll down to Navigation Data.

  3. Look for a version number such as NA-2026.xx-xxxxx.

In the version number, NA refers to the North America region, 2026.xx indicates the map release version, and the trailing digits represent Tesla's internal build identifier.

Tesla Rolls Out the Map Update in Stages

The navigation data package is downloaded automatically when it becomes available, so keeping the vehicle connected to a stable Wi-Fi network is recommended.

Once the download is complete, the vehicle will prompt you to install the navigation data. Installation typically takes only a few minutes and does not require a vehicle restart.

Tesla distributes updates in stages, so not every vehicle will receive the map package at the same time. Availability can vary depending on the vehicle model, geographic region, current software version, and Tesla's rollout schedule.

If NA-2026.26 has not appeared on your vehicle yet, keeping it connected to Wi-Fi and checking the Navigation Data section periodically should allow you to see the update when it becomes available.
