Tesla Giga Shanghai has officially updated the Model Y RWD and Long Range trims with premium interior features. These upgrades include a massive 16-inch central display and a sleek black headliner. Previously, these high-end aesthetics were exclusive to the Performance and Model Y L models. This move signifies Tesla's commitment to delivering a unified premium experience across its most popular vehicle lineup.

1. The Visual Hub: Bigger and Sharper Displays

The primary highlight of this update is the standardization of the 16-inch touchscreen. This replaces the previous 15.4-inch display across the entire Model Y lineup in China. While a 0.6-inch increase sounds small, it offers tangible benefits for daily use.

  • Expanded Real Estate: The new screen adds roughly 3 square inches of viewing area.
  • Design Efficiency: Slimmer bezels create a more modern, edge-to-edge look.
  • Visual Fidelity: Owners benefit from higher contrast and superior resolution.
Feature Old Configuration New Standard
Display Size 15.4 inches 16 inches
Visual Area Standard +2.63% increase
Bezel Width Traditional Ultra-thin design

2. Black Interior Hardware: Premium Consistency

Tesla has officially phased out the light gray fabric headliner for the entry-level Model Y. All models now feature a black Alcantara-style headliner. This creates a significantly more luxurious cabin atmosphere.

This dark theme extends to several interior components:

  • A-pillar trim and panels.
  • The entire ceiling liner.
  • Sun visors and seatbelt D-rings.

Notably, this change remains consistent even if you select the white interior option. The dark material provides a high-contrast look and effectively reduces glare in bright lighting conditions.

3. Giga Shanghai Leads the Global Rollout

Currently, these updates are exclusive to vehicles produced at Giga Shanghai. However, Tesla often uses its Chinese facility as a testing ground for manufacturing optimizations. Historical patterns suggest these changes will likely reach North American and European markets soon.

Standardizing parts across all trims reduces supply chain complexity. As older inventory is depleted, the 16-inch screen and black headliner will likely become the new global standard. In fact, Tesla recently registered the Model Y L with European authorities, further hinting at an imminent international expansion.
