Tesla Reintroduces Turn Signal Stalks: Model 3 Update Hits China Market First

Tesla is making a significant design reversal by reinstalling physical turn signal stalks on Model 3 vehicles for the Chinese market. This change addresses user feedback and improves driving experience.

1. Design Reversal: Stalk Returns to Model 3

Tesla Engineering VP Lars Moravy previously admitted the company "removed too much" during Model 3's redesign. This comment signaled the potential return of traditional controls.

The change follows the redesigned Model Y which restored the left turn signal stalk in January 2025.

In 2023, the refreshed Model 3 eliminated traditional stalks. It used steering wheel buttons and touchscreen controls. This design drew considerable user criticism.

While some drivers adapted to the new system, it remained a hesitation factor for potential buyers. Tesla decided to modify the design to avoid impacting sales.

2. Simplified Stalk Design Features

The new stalk isn't identical to previous versions. Like the updated Model Y, Model 3's left stalk handles basic turn signal operations only.

It loses these integrated functions:

  • Wiper control
  • High-beam switching
  • Washer fluid activation

Operation simplifies to simple up-down movements. This change benefits from improved auto-canceling turn signals.

High-beam functionality has also changed. Moving the stalk to activate high beams is no longer available. It's replaced by:

  • Improved auto high beams
  • Manual steering wheel controls

3. Market Strategy and Timeline

Tesla recently prefers launching new products in China first. The stalk return continues this strategy. Industry experts expect this modification to expand to other regions quickly.

The 2025 Model 3 refresh importantly reintroduces the turn signal stalk. Current stalk-less Model 3 versions might gradually become rare.

4. Retrofit Program for Existing Owners

Existing owners can upgrade after August 19, 2024. The service costs ¥2,499 to replace steering wheel buttons with a physical stalk.

Tesla Service Centers will provide this upgrade starting mid-September. The service applies to Model 3 vehicles produced after February 7, 2025.

Important requirements:

  • Professional technician installation required
  • DIY installation voids warranty
  • Original steering wheel must be returned for recycling
  • Price includes parts and labor

5. Model-Specific Implementation Plans

This design change might not cover all Tesla models:

Model Stalk Implementation Status
Model S Uncertain - few recent updates
Model X Uncertain - few recent updates
Cybertruck Unlikely - steer-by-wire technology better suits integrated buttons
Model Y Already implemented since January 2025
Model 3 Currently rolling out in China

European markets particularly benefit from physical stalks. Numerous roundabouts require frequent turn signal use. Physical stalks offer more intuitive operation.

The new stalk uses a single detent design. It replaces the traditional two-stage structure. This relies more on auto-canceling functions.

Consumer response has been positive. Many potential buyers stated they would wait for new models with stalks. This shows Tesla's responsiveness to market needs.

In coming months, stalk-equipped Model 3 vehicles will begin delivery. The market will then better evaluate this design change's practical effects.
