Model Y Interior Refresh: Tesla North America Standardizes 16-Inch Screen and Black Headliner(image)

Starting June 5, 2026, Tesla has quietly standardized premium interior features across the entire Model Y lineup in North America. Following a successful rollout in China, the black headliner and larger 16-inch center display are no longer reserved for high-end trims.

This update ensures a more cohesive and premium cabin aesthetic for every buyer, from the entry-level RWD to the Performance model. The move mirrors the strategy seen earlier this year when Tesla standardized these features in the Chinese market, effectively eliminating the visual disparity between "base" and "premium" configurations.

1. The Interior Overhaul

Previously, Tesla’s entry-level models featured a lighter gray headliner that many owners found mismatched with the rest of the dark cabin components. Some customers even resorted to aftermarket modifications to achieve a sleeker look.

By making the black headliner standard across the US and Canadian fleets, Tesla has created a unified design language that elevates the perceived quality of the $39,990 entry-level Model Y.

Beyond the aesthetic change, the hardware has received a significant boost. The central touchscreen has grown from 15.4 inches to 16 inches, accompanied by an upgrade to QHD (1440P) resolution.

3. Important Buyer’s Notes

If you are planning to order a new Model Y in North America, please keep the following in mind:

  • Automatic Inclusion: These features are now standard. There is no need to select specific options during checkout; they are included in all newly produced vehicles.

  • Accessories Warning: If you are shopping for a screen protector, ensure it is specifically designed for the 16-inch display. Older 15.4-inch protectors will not fit the new hardware.

  • Retrofits Unavailable: Tesla does not provide official services to upgrade existing cars with these features. These changes are exclusively for current and future production lines.

This rollout signifies a major step in Tesla's ongoing commitment to cabin refinement, ensuring that even their most affordable models offer a high-tech, premium experience right from the factory floor.
