2. What is Powerwall? A 24/7 Energy Bank

- Super Battery, Always Ready

   Powerwall is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery for home energy storage, made by Tesla Energy. Powerwall stores electricity for solar self-consumption, time-based load shifting, and backup power.

   Each unit has a capacity of 13.5 kWh, enough to power a typical home for a whole day. It acts as a smart energy manager. It charges automatically when electricity is cheap and discharges during peak hours. 

   It supports up to 11.5 kW peak output, running high-power devices like air conditioners, induction cookers, and EV chargers.

- The Best Partner for Solar

   When connected to rooftop solar panels, Powerwall stores excess solar energy during the day. It comes with a fully integrated solar inverter. 

   This allows efficient storage and conversion of solar energy to power your home. You can use more solar energy during the day and enjoy free power at night.

- Modular Expansion, Unlimited Energy

   One Powerwall can power your whole home, making backup protection more affordable. Each device has an integrated solar inverter, improving efficiency and speeding up installation. 

   This reduces the cost of multi-unit systems and makes future expansion easier.

For example, Powerwall 3 measures H x W x D 43.5" x 24" x 7.6" and weighs 287 lbs. The system can be expanded anytime, with up to 40.5 kWh max addition per unit.

3. How Does Powerwall Work?

3.1 With a Solar System

- Daytime: Solar energy powers your home first. Excess energy is stored in Powerwall. If solar is not enough, the grid supplies the rest.

- Night or Outage: Powerwall releases stored solar energy to power your home.

- Daily Solar Cycle: The next day, sunlight recharges Powerwall, creating a sustainable clean energy loop.

- Smart Notifications: The Tesla App sends real-time updates, such as grid outages.

3.2 Without a Solar System

- Electricity Cost Optimization: Powerwall charges during off-peak hours and discharges during peak hours. This lowers your electricity bill.

- Backup Protection: It automatically detects grid outages and switches to backup power, ensuring basic needs are met.

3.3 No Backup Configuration (Powerwall+ Only)

- Operation Limits: When the grid is normal, Powerwall can store solar energy for night use, join virtual power plants (VPP), and sell electricity at high prices.

It does not support backup during outages (cannot supply power if the grid is down).

- Current Compatibility: Only Powerwall+ supports this mode (Powerwall 2/3 do not yet support it).

4. The Future of Powerwall

   Powerwall was first launched in 2015 as Powerwall 1, with limited production. 

   The larger Powerwall 2 began mass production in early 2017 at Tesla's Nevada Gigafactory

   The more powerful Powerwall 3 features a built-in DC-AC inverter and will start production at the end of 2023. By May 2021, Tesla had installed 200,000 Powerwalls

   In 2023, Powerwall held a 47% market share in the residential solar-plus-storage market, while Enphase Energy had 17%.

Tesla's vision for Powerwall includes:

- Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Expansion:

   Tesla plans to connect Powerwall users worldwide into a unified energy network. AI will balance regional power supply and demand.

- Smart Grid Integration:

   Working with utilities, Tesla is developing Net Energy Metering (NEM) programs. These reward customers who share excess solar energy with the grid.

- Disaster Resilience:

   In extreme weather, Powerwall ensures your power stays on. The Storm Watch Function automatically charges Powerwall to full before outages.
