Tesla recently introduced the High Voltage Battery and Drive Unit Extended Service Agreement (Battery ESA) for owners in the United States and Canada. This specialized plan provides extra protection for the vehicle's most critical systems after the original warranty expires. By covering the high-voltage battery and drive unit, Tesla aims to support long-term owners and ensure continued vehicle reliability.

1. Coverage, Pricing, and Deductibles

According to the official terms of the agreement, the Battery ESA is a one-time payment program designed to manage the financial risks of long-term EV ownership. It takes effect immediately after your original 8-year factory warranty concludes.

  • Cost for Model 3/Y: $2,000 USD or $2,800 CAD.
  • Protection Term: Up to 2 years or 30,000 miles (48,000 km), whichever comes first.
  • Service Deductible: Owners pay a $500 USD ($700 CAD) deductible per service visit.

Given that a full battery replacement can cost between $10,000 and $15,000, this deductible represents a predictable and manageable cost for major repairs.

2. Eligibility and Purchase Windows

Tesla maintains a strict "no grace period" policy for this service agreement. You must complete your purchase while the vehicle is still covered by its original limited warranty.

  • Strict Deadline: If your warranty expires by even one day or one mile, you lose eligibility.
  • How to Buy: Open the Tesla App, navigate to Upgrades > Service Plans, and look for the Battery ESA option.
  • Ownership Type: The plan is available for purchased vehicles but excludes leased cars.

3. What is Included (and Excluded)

The agreement focuses exclusively on the "Big Three" electrical components of your Tesla. It covers repairs or replacements caused by failures during normal use.

Category Covered Items
High Voltage Battery Full HV Lithium-ion battery assembly.
Drive Unit Electric motors, gearbox, drive inverter, and internal drive components.
Major Exclusions 12V low-voltage batteries, external sensors, wiring harnesses, cables, and coolant hoses.

4. Transferability and Cancellation Policy

One major advantage of the Battery ESA is its transferability. If you sell your Tesla, the remaining coverage moves to the new owner through the Tesla App. This feature can significantly increase your vehicle's resale value on the used market.

If you change your mind, Tesla offers a flexible cancellation policy:

  • Before Coverage Starts: You receive a full refund.
  • First 60 Days (No Claims): You receive a full refund.
  • After 60 Days (Or After a Claim): You receive a pro-rated refund based on time/mileage used, minus any paid claims.

For Model 3 and Model Y owners planning to keep their cars for a decade or more, this plan serves as a powerful financial tool to mitigate long-term maintenance risks.
